Le Massif de Charlevoix: Lift-Served Riding,Mountain Views, and the St. Lawrence

Some trail systems you ride because the trails are great. Others you ride because the place is great. Le Massif de Charlevoix is one of the rare ones where both are true at the same time. This is a lift-served bike park perched on the edge of the St. Lawrence River, with the longest vertical drop east of the Canadian Rockies and views that genuinely stop you mid-descent. We’ve ridden a lot of places. We’ve never seen anything quite like this.

Le Massif is a different kind of day. You don’t pedal up. You ride a gondola or a chairlift to the top, you point your bike down, and you do it again. And again. And the entire time, the St. Lawrence stretches out beneath you like an inland sea.

What You’re Actually Riding

Le Massif de Charlevoix sits in Petite-Rivière-Saint-François, about an hour east of Quebec City along the river. The bike park opened in 2020 — relatively new in the bike-park world — and has grown rapidly into a major destination. There are roughly 55 kilometres of purpose-built trails on the mountain, including 23 gravity-fed enduro routes, two skills zones, and a pro line for the truly committed.

The vertical drop is the headline number: 770 metres top to bottom. That’s the most vertical you can ride in eastern Canada, and it changes the entire character of the day. A single descent can be 5, 6, even 7 minutes of continuous riding. By lap three, your forearms know you’re at a real bike park.

The trail building is excellent. Most of the trails fall on the flowy, fast end of the spectrum — bermed corners, machine-built tabletop sections, predictable rhythm. But there are also technical lines, rock features, and tighter natural sections added in recent years for the riders who want them. The crown jewel for most visitors is Cerise sur le Sundae — 3 kilometres of pure descent with the St. Lawrence in view the entire way down.

A bike park designed for trail bikes, lift-served, with views of the river the whole way down. We don’t know of another place quite like it.

Who It’s For

Intermediate riders looking for a confidence-building bike park: Le Massif is one of the more accessible bike parks in North America. The flowy trails are forgiving, the lift-served format means you’re not gassed from climbing, and you can session the same trail multiple times until you nail it.

Gravity riders: The vertical is real. Bring a trail or enduro bike, full-face helmet recommended, and prepare for serious descending. The pro line and double-black options will satisfy strong riders.

Families and mixed-ability groups: The skills zones — La Chouenneuse at the summit, plus one at the base — let newer riders find their footing. The family loops and beginner trails mean nobody has to sit out.

First-time bike park riders: Honestly, this is a great place to learn what bike park riding is all about. The trails escalate progressively, the staff are helpful, and the rental fleet is dialled.

A Few Things to Know

Cerise sur le Sundae is mandatory: 3 km, top to bottom, view of the St. Lawrence the entire way. Ride it on your first lap to set the tone.

The skills zones are worth your time: La Chouenneuse at the summit is the warm-up. Spend 20 minutes here on your first run before you commit to a full descent.

Bring a real bike: A trail bike or enduro bike is the right tool. The descents are long enough that XC bikes will leave you exhausted and underbiked.

The adventure trails are different: If you want to escape the lift-served crowd, the Lac Gauthier loops and the Boréal trail offer longer, more remote rides that you have to pedal.

Plan Your Day

Where to park: Two options. Summit access at 185 Chemin du Massif (most riders start here and ride down). Base access at 1350 rue Principale. The last lift up is at 4 p.m. for summit-parked guests, 3:30 p.m. for base-parked.

Cost: Day passes for the bike park (current pricing on lemassif.com — typically in the $55-70 CAD range for an adult day pass with lift access). Rentals available on site, including Rocky Mountain trail and enduro bikes.

When to ride: The bike park typically opens in late June and runs through October. In 2026, opening was scheduled around late June. Always confirm dates before driving up.

Bring: Trail bike or enduro bike, full pads if you have them, full-face helmet recommended for the bigger descents.

Drive time: About an hour east of Quebec City. From Toronto, plan a 10-hour drive or fly in.

Make It a Bikes and Beers Day

Camp Boule sits at the summit — full restaurant with panoramic views over the St. Lawrence. After a long day of descending, sitting on that terrace with a cold beer and watching the river roll by is one of the better apres-ride experiences in Canada. The Charlevoix region itself is one of Quebec’s most loved food and drink destinations — local cheeses, microbreweries, farm-to-table restaurants. Stay an extra night. You’ll thank yourself.

We build Le Massif into our bigger Quebec trips when the timing works. If you’ve never ridden a lift-served bike park or want to come back to one with a crew who knows the place, watch for the announcement.

Bikes and Beers Adventures is an Ontario-based mountain bike club and adventure travel company. We run weekly group rides, weekend adventures, training programs, and trips across Ontario, Quebec, and beyond.
